JUNE 2006
Safe
Kids Boot Camp 2006 was a great success! Safe Kids Springfield and Safety
Council of the Ozarks hosted this pilot program to promote safety and
injury prevention to children entering 2nd and 3rd grades. At this ½ day
program, campers learned about safety topics including summer safety, home
safety, vehicle safety, bike safety and pedestrian safety focusing on a
different topic each day of camp.
Children had the opportunity to play games, do activities, watch
videos, and interact with speakers to keep them entertained while learning
about safety. In addition to receiving education, children were provided
with various safety devices, such as bicycle helmets, life jackets and
smoke alarms. Partners in this program included the Army Corps of
Engineers, Missouri Poison Center, Springfield Police and Fire
Departments, Traffic Safety Alliance, St. John's Trauma Services,
Springfield-Greene County Health Department, American Cancer Society,
Chesterfield Family Center, State Farm Insurance, Springfield R-12
Schools, and cyclist Buck VanHooser.
Safe Kids is working on making this an annual program, expanding it to
a full-day program, increasing the number of topics and speakers, and
making it even better for 2007. Check this site frequently to receive
updates.
