Fire Prevention

Home fires can start and spread quickly, which is why we all need to be careful and educated when it comes to fire safety. Just a little bit of planning can make a big difference for your family.

The Facts

  • Nearly eighty-seven percent of all fire-related deaths are due to home fires, which spread rapidly and can leave families as little as two minutes to escape once an alarm sounds.
  • Working smoke alarms reduce the chances of dying in a reported home fire by fifty percent.

Top Tips

  • Working smoke alarms are a critical first step for staying safe. For the best protection, install smoke alarms on every level of your home and in every sleeping area.
  • Test smoke alarms every month and replace them every 10 years.
  • Create a home fire escape plan with two ways out of every room in case of a fire, such as the door and a window.
  • Practice a home fire drill at least twice a year with your family. Choose a place to meet outside that is a safe distance away from your home.
  • Make sure your children know the sound of the smoke alarm and what to do when you hear it.
  • In case of fire, leave your home before calling 911. Feel the door for heat with the back of your hand before opening.  Crawl on your hands and knees to stay low and go, to avoid smoke in the air.
  • Make a habit of placing matches, gasoline, and lighters in a safe place, out of children’s reach. Avoid novelty lighters or lighters that look like toys.
  • Place space heaters at least 3 feet from curtains, furniture, or flammable items.
  • Never leave a burning candle unattended.
